Deleterious effects of caustic cleaner solution on paper machine lubricant properties. L.R. Kray et al. Lubric. Engng., June 1996, 52(6), 452--458.

Effects of caustic degreasing agents on lubricants used in paper manufacturing machines are reported. The lubricant is a typical ash-type paper machine oil and 5 to 20% caustic solutions are used. Problems investigated are formation of heavy emulsions, short lubricant filter element life, deposit formation, poor water separation, depletion of additive metals, and loss of lubricant rust-inhibiting properties. Circulating oil test stand experiments are described and a laboratory apparatus is illustrated. Scanning electron microscopy is used to analyse oil filter material and deposits. X-ray analysis shows that gels and particulates contain lubricant metals. It is recommended that lubricant exposure to cleaning solutions should be minimized. 3 refs.
