Consideration is given to the varied functional framework for underground natural gas storage on the basis of the French example, details being included of the various techniques in current usage. Storage facilities worldwide are discussed together with the orders of magnitude, and a number of evolutionary trends are mentioned. Recent technical achievements are also reviewed, and tabulated data and a schematic cross-section of an underground gas storage facility in an aquifer are included. 4 refs.
