Fabrication costs of steel and polyethylene [PE] pipelines. Paper. Proc. Conf., Pipeline technology, Vol. 1, pages 267--278. (See abstract 406 for complete reference).

The various possibilities in fabrication of low and medium pressure pipelines are surveyed, consideration being given to the design of steel and polyethylene pipelines. For PE pipelines heated element butt welding and the electrofusion process have been analysed. The most important parameters which affect the selection of material and joining method are discussed and an outline is given of a systematic approach to produce the most suitable solution. Fabrication costs for steel and PE pipelines have been analysed and it was proven that the latter are less expensive than steel pipelines---in many cases savings may be as high as 50%. 5 refs.
