Pioneering offshore research in Aberdeen. K.A. Macdonald and M.J. Baker. J. Offshore Technol., August 1995, 3(3), 9--14.

An outline is presented of the way in which the research base, especially in the area of offshore engineering, is being strengthened. Consideration is given to laser welding; optical holography for underwater inspection and precision mensuration; methods and tools for cost-effective subsea inspection planning; impact loading on soil-backed subsea pipelines; the application of fracture mechanics to fatigue of drillstring threaded connections; computer modelling of power electronic loads on offshore installations; and computer simulation of the dynamics of bottomhole assembly.
