A case history is presented of the conversion of a standard, newbuild, Aframax tanker for use as an FSO in the UK sector of the North Sea. Specific attention being paid to compliance with UK statutory requirements. Details are given to the projects background, basic tanker design and construction, initial conversion undertaken at builder's yard, CoF, interpretation by Classification Society and vessel operator, subsequent requirements and physical modifications, safety---the main agent of change, with major implications for management and control of the vessel, its operations, both onshore and onboard. The various decisions undertaken during the conversion process are reviewed analytically.
