Although trading profits increased in 1993 the overall return on investment was only 3.9%. The petrochemical section was barely profitable, being affected by low prices resulting from global over supply and the large amount of new capacity in East and S E Asia. The need for government assistance to make the Australian industry more competitive is discussed.
