Impact of environmental regulations on drilling fluid technology. R.K. Clark. JPT, September 1994, 46(9), 804--809.

Detailed coverage is given to advances in drilling fluid technology. New water-based mud systems are approaching the performance levels typical of conventional oil-based muds, levels mainly achieved by synthetic-based fluids. These new drilling fluids do not have the adverse environmental impact associated with oil-based systems when waste fluids and cuttings are discarded. The main coverage is based primarily on regulations and practices in the Gulf of Mexico, however, where appropriate, the impact of regulations and new practices in other drilling areas worldwide is also mentioned. A useful bibliography of 65 references is included.
