Neural network modelling of distillation columns. R. Baratti, G. Vacca and A. Servida. Hydrocarbon Processing, June 1995, 74(6), 35--38.

Application of neural network modelling (NNM) is described for monitoring and control of two distillation columns at SARAS refinery in Italy. One is a butane splitter tower with 56 trays which separates normal and iso-butanes; the other is a 37 tray gasoline stabilizer unit. Advanced control systems that rely on model-based nonlinear control strategies are described. Results show the potential and versatility of NNM for developing software sensors. NNM is incorporated within a dynamic control estimator and process performance is inferred from a process model and by measuring a few state variables. 10 refs.
