A value chain for energy production is described. It includes gas, fuel oil, solid fuels, gasoline, chemicals, and chemical-based products. Electricity is seen as an attractive and logical extension of this value chain. Energy development projects are described as having evaluation, definition or front-end loading, execution, and operational stages. All these stages are reviewed. Three designs of combustion turbine cycles are described and illustrated but the preferred design is a combined cycle with a steam turbine. The development of power and process projects is compared and attention is drawn to several important differences. 3 refs.
