Teamwork increases fractionation capacity cost-effectively. J.H. Talib, B. Germinder and M.P. Hitchcock. Hydrocarbon Processing, October 1997, 76(10), 121--126.

A project carried out by a gas distribution company in Louisiana is described. It involves refurbishing an existing four-column fractionation facility to process feed from cryogenic gas processing plants. Six steps in a debottlenecking operation to upgrade the fractionation capacity from 34 000 to 42 000 brl/day are described and illustrated. The columns are a de-ethanizer, depropanizer, debutanizer and deisubutanizer. Details are given of debottlenecking operations on the four towers, heat exchangers, hot oil heater, refrigeration system, and cooling water operations. The estimated project cost is $35.67 million and fractionation efficiency is increased by 25%.
