The purpose of the coat-back is to reduce the heat transfer through the attachment into the primary steelwork and hence limit the extent and severity of a local hot spot. The development is reported of a method for determining the average primary member temperature in the zone of attachment, on the basis of which the designer is able to assess within the context of fire engineering scenario based design, the extent of coat-back required 4 refs.
