Marine environmental protection within the United Nations system. F. Biermann, North Sea Monitor, December 1996, 10--13.

Attention is drawn to two key developments---firstly the entering into force in November 1994 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and its implications for NGOs; and secondly the implications for marine environmental protection of the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development. Global policies on land-based activities, political will, and the future of POP (persistent organic pollutants) agreement, and the UN Commission on Sustainable Development are considered.
