Horizontal well cyclic combustion, Wabasca air injection pilot. B. Thornton, D. Hassan and J. Eubank. J. Can. Petrol. Technol., November 1996, 35(9), 40--44.

A novel combustion-related heavy oil recovery process in the Wabasca oil sands deposit 250 km north of Edmonton, is described. A horizontal injection well is flanked by two horizontal producing wells and, after a period of primary production from all three wells, the injection well is preheated with steam and ignited with air. The down hole injection configuration is described and illustrated. Production from the flanking wells is started after the air injection is terminated. Production response to date is very favourable and this is attributed to reservoir repressurization. The enhanced oil recovery is expected to extend production from thin pay reservoirs after primary depletion. 4 refs.
