Review of the more common standard grease tests in use today. R.E. Rush. Lubric. Engng., March 1997, 53(3), 17--15.

Tests used in the performance evaluation of greases are reviewed. The most important are considered to be penetration and dropping point. Water content, water sprayoff, shear stability and mobility tests are also discussed. Details are also given for a bleeding and evaporation test, base oil viscosity, rust and corrosion, the Shell roller test, a wheel bearing test, oxidation, Timken-test Shell four-ball wear and EP tests, FZG tests, and an oil separation test. In each case the procedure is summarized and the equipment is described and illustrated. Tabulated data for nine different EP tests are summarized and typical results are recorded.
