Why a proactive maintenance programme for hydraulic oil is part of statistical process control. V. Srimongkolkul. Lubric. Engng., April 1997, 53(4), 10--14.

Application of statistical process control (SPC) in industrial plants is recommended to reduce production costs and improve product quality control. A proactive maintenance programme for hydraulic oil requires detailed data on performance, reducing variability in the oil, and preventing oil problems before they occur. Regular analysis of the oil shows the type and amount of contamination. The tests include particle size analysis, viscosity, acidity, specific gravity, and water content. SPC analysis of a typical hydraulic oil is described and illustrated. Results show the sampling frequency and the sample source. Six particle counts are shown in various micron sizes. The ISO code, water content, TAN value, and viscosity are also recorded.
