Energy Insight: Nuclear: top ten nuclear generating countries (DSS35)

2017 figures show that all countries ranked in the top 10 depend on nuclear power for at least a third of their electricity with France ranked highest depending on nuclear power for 72.3% of their electricity.

In 2010 the UK dropped out of the top ten listing, and was ranked at number eleven with 56.9 billion kWh of nuclear electricity generated. The UK re-entered the top ten in 2012 and was ranked 9th in the world where it has stayed since. The UK government have said that 16 GW of new nuclear power capacity should be built across five sites by 2030.

Japan dropped out of the top ten in 2012 as a result of the difficulties suffered at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the March 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Japan has indicated that it will be scaling back its nuclear power in favour of a greater proportion of renewables. Before Fukushima Daiichi the country initially envisaged nuclear making up more than 50% of Japan's energy needs by 2030.

Germany dropped out of the top ten in 2014. The German government has announced plans to shut all of its nuclear reactors by 2022 and will instead concentrate on developing renewable energy sources.
