Energy Insight: Electricity - renewables: solar electricity (DSS28)

Please note this Insight is no longer being updated.  You will find more recent information via our

Between 1990 and 2017 electricity from solar photovoltaics and solar thermal increased from 748 GWh to 280,087 GWh. Solar photovoltaics was the fastest growing of all renewable electricity technologies with a 34.8% annual growth rate.

In 2017 the USA produced the most solar PV electricity followed by Germany, Italy and the UK. In terms of solar thermal production Spain accounted for 5.9 TWh, the USA 5.4 TWh and Australia 6 GWh.

Solar technologies have been so successful because they are becoming increasingly affordable, efficient and reliable. There is also generally strong policy support and deployment around the world. See our Energy Insight on solar panels and solar roof tiles for more information.
