London cable tunnel breakthrough.jpg A cable tunnelling machine which is burrowing between the East End and the City of London has successfully broken into an underground cable chamber at an electricity substation. The picture shows the 50 tonne boring machine, Karen, being lowered into the cable tunnel shaft in the East End last year The £14mn investment by electricity network operator UK Power Networks is providing a new power connection between substations in Whitechapel, in the East End, and Finsbury Market, in the City, to increase the capacity and resilience of electricity supplies in the capital. UK Power Networks is carrying out the project in partnership with its contractor, Morgan Sindall. The tunnel breakthrough at the 1.1 km point was a key milestone in the construction of the 2.6 km tunnel taking shape beneath London. Tunnelling started in Whitechapel last May and is expected to reach Finsbury Market in spring this year. It has covered a further distance of 650 metres since the breakthrough into the cable shaft. The 2.6 metre wide tunnel will be lined with brackets supporting 132,000 V electricity cables 25 to 35 metres below ground.
