Solar PV in Romania, Turkey, Poland A 9 MW solar PV plant has been completed and connected to the grid on a 14 ha area of land in Isaccea, Romania, 220 km north-east of Bucharest. The plant, from Gehrlicher Solar, features 35,000 modules manufactured by JA Solar, and was constructed for Ra Ra Parc, its investor and operator. SMA produced the nine central inverters for converting solar power into grid-compatible alternating current. Elsewhere, in Turkey, a 540 kW solar park has been constructed at Izmir airport - the first photovoltaic project at an airport in the region, and the largest solar power plant in the country. The park features solar panels from Canadian Solar, and is the first project under the recent Turkish solar energy legislation, YEK, for solar power plants under 500 kW (450 kW of the capacity is on-grid, and 90 kW off-grid). The YEK regulation has encouraged a pipeline of projects totalling 40-50 MW so far, and emphasises the interest of the government in the development of a renewable energy industry in Turkey and to increase the diversification of energy resources. The Izmir park is comprised of a ground-mounted installation of 450 kW and 90 kW of off-grid systems on several radar stations. Finally, the roof of a catholic church in Poland is now the home of a 37 kW PV system (pictured), again featuring modules from Canadian Solar. The church, in Skoczow-Pogorze in Upper Silesia had the panels installed in three weeks by Polish project developer RenSan Energy. The solar energy supplies the electric heating of the building, as well as the lightning system of the presbytery and adjoining buildings, including several chapels, conference rooms, 30 guest rooms and the canteen kitchen. The project also benefits financially for the kWh that are fed into the grid within a ‘green certificate’ framework system.
