Panel/photo story ESTA EMYA 2012.jpg Matt Hastings, Energy Manager of the Eden Project in Cornwall, has been named ESTA Energy Manager of the Year at a celebration dinner held at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham, in May. The award is made annually by the Energy Services and Technology Association (ESTA) to a person who has identified potential energy efficiency savings; developed policies and measures to improve energy performance; secured investment in time/money for projects; informed and motivated customers, colleagues and/or the supply chain; promoted technology innovation; and implemented policies and measures to improve energy performance. Matt Hastings (pictured left) has been the Eden Project’s Energy Manager for three years. He has overhauled Eden’s technical assets (building energy management systems, boilers, hot water systems, inverters, biomass, LED lamps, etc) and played a leading role in the planning for a 4 MWe, 3.5 MWth deep geothermal power project on the site. His energy awareness campaigns within the Eden Project made the organisation’s dinner lady a star and saw the Operations Director don a green latex cat suit and take on the alter-ego of ‘Captain Kilowatt’. On receiving his award, Matt said: ‘Ultimately, energy management is about change, turning the tanker around and flipping it on its head. I want Eden to set a standard which changes the industry. We have set the bar high, not in the name of social responsibility but in the name of common sense.’ Other finalists in the competition were energy managers from Sainsbury’s, BT, Boots Contract Manufacturing and Northern Rail.
