Iceland's volcanoes may power UK

The UK energy minister, Charles Hendry, will visit Iceland in May to discuss the possibility of connecting the UK to Iceland's geothermal energy supply. Hendry has already met with the head of Iceland's national grid. The project would require an ocean floor interconnector cable 1,000 to 1,500km long between the two countries. Two international interconnector cables already exist from the UK, to France and the Netherlands, but nine more are either in construction, formal planning or undergoing feasibility studies. As North Sea oil and gas reserves decrease, and we try to cut down on using polluting coal, an increasing percentage of our energy will need to be imported.
