UKERC: first predictions of how much electricity will cost up to 2040

The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) are undertaking a review of past research studies aiming to predict the future costs of electricity generation. The aggregated data will be input to an optimisation model like MARKAL (http://www.iea-etsap.org/web/Markal.asp) and then used for shaping energy infrastructure policy. The Centre have released their emerging trends so far for the future costs of gas along with on and offshore wind farms up 2030 - this can be viewed in interactive format on the Guardian website at http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/interactive/2012/feb/29/electricity-generating-costs. The initial data trends show the costs of wind and gas as being in overlapping range during the 2020s, depending on gas prices scenarios and continued, but quite modest, improvement in wind costs.
