Shale gas push 'would wreck UK's climate change targets'

The Tyndall Centre at the University of Manchester has published a new report commissioned by the Cooperative Group investigating the environmental and climate change impacts of Shale Gas - see http://www.tyndall.ac.uk/shalegasreport for the full report. The report concludes that exploiting UK shale gas resources could increase carbon emissions significantly, making meeting government targets to cut CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 more difficult. Groundwater pollution and the large amounts of water required for shale gas extraction are other potential environmental issues.
