Prof Allan Jones wins Melchett award Professor Allan Jones FEI, UK Country Director of E.ON Engineering, is the latest recipient of the Energy Institute’s Melchett Award, which is presented in recognition of an individual’s outstanding contribution to the study or advancement of the science of fuel and energy. Allan is an expert in fuels, combustion and emissions, with 35 years’ experience in the field. Previous to his current role, he was Head of Research and Development for E.ON UK, where he contributed to the recruitment, mentoring and development of young graduate engineers and scientists. Held after the EI AGM on 7 July, Allan’s Melchett Lecture presented an overview of activity in the UK power sector since the 1970s, using coal-fired power generation to illustrate the advances made by R&D over the years. He paid particular attention to the progressive clean-up of the coal combustion process and highlighted the new challenges facing coal as it fights for a place in the UK’s future energy mix.
