A 24 MW solar PV plant is nearing completion in Montalto di Castro, Italy. The plant, covering 80 ha, is planned by solar companies SunRay Renewable Energy and SunPower and is being financed by a consortium of primary international and Italian banks. Upon its completion (scheduled for the new year), it will be the largest operating solar power plant in Italy. Construction began in early 2008 and has created more than 200 local jobs. The power generated by the plant will provide electricity locally as well as contributing to Italy’s national grid. The site will also have a visitor centre focusing on the education of the local community and school children about renewable energy. The plant will feature SunPower’s Tracker technology which follows the sun during the day and delivers up to 25% more energy than fixed systems, while significantly reducing land use requirements, according to the company. The project is the first phase of a planned 100 MW development that is expected to be fully operational in 2010.
