Wintershall has invested €5.9mn on a new combined heat and power (CHP) unit at its Emlichheim site in Lower Saxony,Germany, that will generate 45mn kWh/y of electricity. Furthermore, the excess heat with temperatures of more than 500 ÂșC generated during gas combustion as a by-product of the electricity production, and which conventional plants usually emit into the environment through chimneys, will be used to generate more than 100,000 t/y of steam that will be used to enhance oil production via an existing steam flooding programme at Emlichheim.
