The Canadian government is planning to phase-out traditional coal-fired power stations, Environment Minister Jim Prentice has said. New coal plants will have to include carbon capture and storage technology and there are plans to impose absolute emission caps on utilities’ existing coal-fired plants, and establish a market-based system to allow them to buy credits to meet those targets, reports have said.
