India is reportedly planning to begin construction work on three underground facilities - at Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Podur - to hold strategic stocks of crude oil. Total capacity will be around 5.3mn tonnes, equivalent to 15 days' consumption. It has been proposed that the stockpile should be doubled, but this has yet to receive cabinet approval. The facilities will be managed by Strategic Petroleum Reserves, a subsidiary of the Oil Industry Development Board.
