This autumn sees a new look for IP Standard Test Methods, published by the Energy Institute (EI). This new look forms part of a wider rebranding exercise to build on the strong reputation of the EI’s technical work programme. As the leading professional membership body for the energy industry, the EI undertakes a focused technical programme each year to provide the international energy industry with information and guidance on relevant technical issues relating to health, safety, environment, aviation, distribution and marketing, test methods and hydrocarbon management. This work results in the publication of highly valued guidance documents and codes of good practice, historically known as IP technical publications based on the name of the original publisher ‘The Institute of Petroleum’ (IP). Since the merger with the Institute of Energy in 2003 to establish the EI, this technical work has resulted in a diverse portfolio of publications increasingly relevant to the wider energy sector. Building on the increased profile of the technical programme, all former IP technical publications have now been rebranded EI technical publications, including the Model Code of Safe Practice series, and the joint API/EI series (aviation fuel handling and hydrocarbon management). The exception is IP Standard Test Methods, also published by the EI. These test methods are an essential part of any quality control regime and are also necessary for national and international trading of petroleum and petroleum products. Their numbering system is preceded by IP and is so frequently used, cited and understood by the international petroleum industry, that it could prove detrimental to remove the IP reference. To enable the IP designation to be retained for future use it has been revised to read ‘International Petroleum’ and the logo has been redesigned to reflect these changes and provide a clear indication that it is published by the EI. These changes take immediate effect and will be incorporated into the 2008 edition of the IP Standard Test Methods which features the monotone version of the logo.
