The Lithuanian government is reported to have approved a programmed shutdown of units No 1 and 2 of the Ignalina nuclear power plant during 2005-2009. It has also redefined the stages of the plant's decommissioning - a second stage (2005-2009) will cover preparation for the dismantling of superfluous equipment, while the third stage (2010-2030) will see the actual dismantling of the equipment, the demolition of buildings and the recultivation of the land.
