Consumers are missing out on the benefits of greater competition in energy markets, despite wholesale reductions in the price of energy, UK Energy Minister Brian Wilson has stated. On the eve of a meeting of the EU Energy Council in Brussels, Wilson advised European counterparts to learn from the UK experience of energy liberalisation so that consumers would benefit from the creation of a single EU energy market. He cited a recent report by the National Audit Office that found wholesale prices in the UK energy market had fallen by up to 40% since the New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) were introduced, but the price savings had not been passed on to domestic customers.
