Seven coal mining companies in the UK are to receive over £6mn in government aid following European Commission approval. This takes the total amount of aid approved under the UK Coal Operating Aid Scheme - designed to help the coal industry through short-term energy market problems and to prevent a sudden and sharp decline in the coal industry - to almost £163mn.
