Edinburgh-based consultancy Wood Mackenzie has 'welcomed' the positive recognition given to emissions trading in the European Commission Green Paper on greenhouse gas trading published on 8 March, but warns that parallel EU efforts to restrict international emissions trading may significantly increase the compliance costs for the major greenhouse gas emitting countries of Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as Norway and Japan. The company estimates that the additional cost burden in the three EU countries may exceed $1bn.
