Swiss geothermal power plan abandoned after quakes hit Basel

The geologist Markus Haering is under trial this week under a charge of damaging property, after his plan to generate electricity by boiling water beneath the Earth's surface backfired. The scheme, led by Geopower Basel, involved a number of holes drilled up to three miles underground. However, a series of earthquakes in Basel meant the geothermal power plant had to be abandoned.
