Oil profits at 15-year high

The profitability of British oil companies climbed to a 15-year high in the third quarter of last year, dwarfing the meagre gains made in manufacturing, according to official figures published yesterday. The rise in oil and gas prices in 2000, which has since gone into reverse, boosted the rate of return of the North Sea sector to 36.4%, up from 34.8% in the second quarter, said the office for national statistics.
