Germany opens largest green hydrogen plant

A green hydrogen generation plant said to be one of the largest in Germany has opened at the Wunsiedel Energy Park, with the capacity to produce 1,350 tonnes of hydrogen every year from renewable solar and wind power.

Hydrogen is generated by an electrolyser with a capacity of 8.75 MW. Based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology, the ‘Silyzer 300’ electrolyser is optimally suited for operation with renewable energies, according to operator Siemens.

The hydrogen will be used primarily in the region’s industrial and commercial enterprises, as well as road transport. Siemens estimates that the plant could produce enough hydrogen to allow some 400 40-tonne hydrogen-powered trucks – assuming a regional distance of 150 km/d – to drive for an entire year without emitting any CO2. It adds that the plant is expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to 13,500 t/y.

‘With global warming, energy dependency and rising costs becoming increasingly pressing issues, real-world solutions for the future of energy are crucial,’ says Matthias Rebellius, Managing Board Member of Siemens and CEO of Smart Infrastructure. ‘The Wunsiedel project is an excellent demonstration of how vision and initiative combined with the right technology and financing can drive forward the development of a carbon-free power supply.’

Talks regarding the expansion of the plant’s capacity to 17.5 MW are now underway.
