BP Amoco tries to save Arco deal

BP Amoco will this week try to persuade the US Federal Trade Commission to clear its takeover of Atlantic Richfield (Arco) in spite of a legal challenge from ExxonMobil, the biggest US oil company. ExxonMobil, which is a partner along with BP Amoco and Arco in the giant Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska, objects to the planned sale of Arco's share in the field to Phillips Petroleum of the US. ExxonMobil filed a legal action on Friday to stop the deal.
