In Australia, blue agaves are being grown in order to exploit the use of photosynthesis and, if possible, improve on the current conversion efficiency of 4.6%. The inefficiency is due to the fact that the enzyme rubisco that initiates the sugar-forming process by forming 3-carbon molecular geometries gets sidetracked by collecting oxygen instead. Cactus is one other potential source of biofuels, but water is going to be the limiting factor.
