Total in new joint venture to manufacture batteries in Europe
Total/Saft and Groupe PSA/Opel have signed an agreement to create a new joint venture, ACC, that will develop and manufacture high-performance lithium-ion batteries for the automotive industry from 2023.
Work has already started at a R&D centre in Bordeaux and a pilot site in Nersac, both in France. At the end of the R&D phase, mass production could be launched in two gigafactories, to be based in Douvrin, France, and Kaiserslautern, Germany. Each would have an initial capacity of 8 GWh, reaching a cumulative capacity of 48 GWh on both sites by 2030. This will represent 1mn electric vehicles produced per year, according to the new venture, more than 10% of the European market.
