District heating and heat pump network for Dundee

The Regional Performance Centre Dundee, a hub that provides the Dundee, Scotland community with sporting facilities, now also marks the beginning of a district heating development using ground source heat pumps (GSHP) for the area.

Dundee City Council selected polymer plumbing specialist REHAU to supply the pre-insulated district heating pipework, RAUTHERMEX, between the energy centre and the rest of the development.

The development uses three heat pumps supplied with water from a series of 120 boreholes around 200 m deep, circulating hot water from the on-site energy centre. Powered by a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, these heat pumps supply the main sports hub building and smaller athletics building through the pipework, which is connected to a low-pressure hot water and domestic heat exchanger in each building.
