‘Mammoth’ tidal turbine installed in China during pandemic peak

Scottish tidal energy developer SIMEC Atlantis Energy has completed the installation of one of its ‘mammoth’ 500 kW tidal stream turbines in China.

The turbine has a diameter of 18 m and has been installed between the islands of Putuoshan and Huludao in the Zhoushan archipelago. The project was carried out through SIMEC’s partnership with consultancy ITPEnergised, which subsequently worked with the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) and state-owned power company China Three Gorges to complete the installation.

SIMEC says the success of the project was made all the more impressive given that CSIC’s key manufacturing facilities are located in Wuhan, where the COVID-19 virus first appeared late last year. Studies have estimated that tidal stream energy in China could supply more than 8.2 GW to the country’s generating capacity.
