Tidal power moves closer at Orkney site

Scottish based tidal energy developer Orbital Marine Power has signed up for a second berth at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, as a step towards Orbital delivering its first floating tidal turbine farm.

The company is currently manufacturing its first commercial O2 turbine. With a swept area of over 600 m2 and a generating capacity of 2 MW, the device will be the world’s most powerful tidal turbine – capable of meeting the electricity demand of over 1,700 UK homes, says the company. The turbine is expected to be grid connected at EMEC by the end of this year, with a view to being fully operational in early 2021.
