Up to 30,000 oil and gas jobs could be lost thanks to coronavirus

Oil and Gas UK (OGUK) has published a report predicting a huge number of jobs will be lost over the next 12 to 18 months. Drilling activity this year could halve compared to last year pushing activity levels to record lows and capital investment in infrastructure is expected to fall to the lowest level since 2000. OGUK called for  a range of measures for governments and regulators to support industry now, stimulate a recovery and accelerate the transition to a net zero future. Unions representing offshore workers have also called for action to halt job losses as many workers who face losing their jobs have only recently been re-employed following the previous downturn. A spokesman for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said: "The UK Government has put together a far-reaching package of support to help businesses through the coronavirus pandemic, including offering to pay 80 per cent of the wages of furloughed workers.
