50 MW Cambridgeshire solar farm connects

Yorkshire-based high voltage power contractor, Smith Brothers, has completed engineering works at the Next Energy Capital solar farm in Little Staughton, Cambridgeshire.

Working as the Independent Connection Provider on the project, the team designed, built, installed and tested UK Power Network’s 132 kV substation and private 132/33kV customer substation.

Work on the Little Staughton airfield development began last May, the 50 MW connection was finished in December and generation has begun. Yet construction included some challenges, including 6.5 km of underground cabling, 4.7 km of fibreoptic cabling passing through agricultural land and a further 1.8 km electrical system requiring directional drilling across ditches and roads.
