Alok Sharma takes over as COP26 President

Alok Sharma has been appointed as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), taking over from Andrea Leadsom, as part of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Cabinet reshuffle in early February.

Sharma has also been appointed as the Minister in charge of the COP 26 summit due to take place in Glasgow (or another location south of the border) in November 2020, replacing Claire O’Neill after her surprise sacking from the role of COP26 President. The government stated at the time that it wanted the role to be held by a minister rather than an unelected official.

Kwasi Kwarteng remains Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth following the Cabinet reshuffle.
