In Europe, it is recognised that biofuels will play a major role for heavy duty vehicles, shipping and aviation where the decarbonisation through electrification is more difficult, and the revised RED II was formally adopted in December 2018. There is growth in sourcing biofuels from hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) including cooking oils and tallow, but a reduction of interest in palm oil because of environmental opposition. The production of biodiesel FAME is expected to rise.
