In UK, the 2017 transport statistics revealed that rail, cars, vans, buses and HGVs produced 2, 69.1, 29.4 & 3.4 m tonnes of CO2. Despite the relatively low figure for rail, it is considered necessary for further electrification to permit the abandonment of diesel traction by 2040. The current annual average GHG emissions of 93 and 352 tonnes of electric and diesel rail passenger cars respectively are projected to reduce to 39 tonnes by 2040.  Comparable figures for freight locomotives are 122, 866 and 52 tonnes respectively.
