In UK, a team led by the University of Birmingham together with Porterbrook is developing UK’s first hydrogen-powered train based on an existing Class 319 diesel model. The fuel tanks store 20 kg of hydrogen a 8.5 bar that is fed to fuel cells generating up to 100 kW of electricity. This is sent to a lithium-ion battery pack. This HydroFLEX system can also accommodate power from a 750 V DC third rail, or a 25 kV overhead supply.
