German district heating supplier raises efficiency

GE is to provide its 9EMax gas turbine upgrade solution to the German power producer, Stadtwerke München (SWM), for the utility’s plant in Munich. SWM’s cogeneration plant Heizkraftwerk-Süd produces thermal energy for district heating for industrial and residential users.

Modernising the two existing gas turbines and two generators is expected to increase power output by approximately 15 MW per unit, says GE, and the efficiency of each turbine by up to 3%. When completed in 2020, SWM expects to reduce nitrous oxide emissions significantly.

SWM’s district heating network extends approximately 800 km and provides heat and hot water for a third of the households in Munich. The long-term is to generate carbon-neutral district heating in Munich, primarily using geothermal energy, says the company. Until then, it is working to optimise existing plants.
