J Johnson, Shipping industry begins shift to lower-emissions fuels, Energy World, June 2019, p 1

In the shipping world, the International Maritime Organization is stipulating a reduction in the sulphur content of marine fuels from 3.5% to 0.5% from 1 January 2020. An alternative approach has been to scrub the exhaust gases with sea water, but this leads to acidification of the ocean unless the scrubbers are of the closed loop type. Sulphur reduction may be approached by alternative- or co-fuelling with LNG, hydrogen or ammonia. Interest is also being shown in battery-electric propulsion for ships, as in the auto and aero worlds.
